Are Computers and Technology Killing Relationships?

Is your use of technology and the stuff that go with it killing your relationships? Is technology bad? Only you can answer that question, but I think there will be many YES answers when you start to think about it. Our dependence on social media and technology has slowly taken away our human contact. As humans, we kind of need that physical human contact, but few people are actually getting it. Maybe that is why we sometimes feel so unfulfilled or lonely? Think about it.

Technology has brought us social media like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, blogging, texting, video conferencing, etc. All of these things involve human interaction, but in a way that doesn’t require physical contact or actual social skills. So, do we blame technology for this new way of things or do we blame ourselves for not using it responsibly? Think about that.

We no longer have conversations over dinner, we rather make sure that everyone else in the world knows where we are what we’re doing, and what we’re eating. How much of the dinner was actually spent talking to each other and making a connection? Think back to your last lunch or dinner date.

Alone time or time to recuperate no longer means a nice long bath with a book or just sitting and being. It mostly involves playing games on your phone, Facebook stalking, checking Twitter and Instagram on what you’re missing out on, etc. So, instead of recharging your batteries, you’re latching on to other things that actually drain you more.

People who are looking for a special someone no longer need to go through the awkwardness of approaching someone at the store or the church to make a connection and go on a date. They can just hop on their phone or computer and join a dating site. No need for awkwardness, butterflies, or getting to know each other through face-to-face conversation. You can just stalk the person on social media and get to know them like that. Almost like a process of elimination before you even meet the person.

Does any of this sound familiar? Does it sound right? How well do you know your Facebook friends? When was the last time you hung out with your close friends and just talked and played board games? Do you have actual close friends? Think about it.

We can communicate with friends and family who live far away and make sure that we keep in touch and know what’s going on in each other’s lives. We Skype with them and get to see what they’re up to on Facebook and Instagram. We can text them even when they are a million miles away.

We have photos of all the wonderful places we visited and the stupid things we did in college. We have scrapbooks of great times and photos of loved ones we’ve lost. We have memories made and eternalized on social media.

So, are computers and technology killing our relationships? Yes, they are but only because we allow them to. We don’t need to be on our phones or the computer all the time. We can have face-to-face dates and conversations. We can enjoy good times without friends without constantly documenting everything and sharing it with a world that probably doesn’t even care. So, what is your answer? Are you allowing technology to kill your relationships?
